At midnight on 31 December, there is a tradition of celebrating the New Year with the ringing of Big Ben’s bells. Big Ben is the iconic clock tower at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. The bells ringing from the tower are seen as a symbol of hope and optimism for the year ahead and for many people it is an important part of their New Year’s Eve experience. In the new year of 2023, Big Ben will once again ring out with its first full-scale display since 2019. When the clock strikes midnight, ticket holders can go directly to the live show, while online streaming will be available via BBC iPlayer and BBC One. As usual, Big Ben is rung at exactly 11 o’clock every day and its low, loud sound can be heard for miles. And on New Year’s Eve, a special day, Big Ben strikes an extra 12 times to mark the start of a new year. Without further ado, allow me to wish you all a Happy New Year from the chimes of Big Ben!
